If you specialize in soil mechanics or structural engineering, chances are you will be able to have a job where you spend a significant amount of time outdoors.

Before a major construction project such as a bridge, dam, or building, many tests and measurements must be made. The soil needs to be tested, as well as the slope of the land and surrounding structures.

These types of jobs can only be done on-site, and provide for a very hands-on career.
