Job Description:
This type of scientist studies beautiful gems collected in the field. Using lab equipment, gemologists classify gems or discover new characteristics of those that have been identified. Gemologists study the physical properties of samples and use scientific procedures to assign a grade to the gems studied.

Education Required: A gemologist must earn a degree in this field from the Gemological Institute of America or a college offering this area of study.
