San Francisco, California
One of the weirdest buildings on this list, the California Academy of Sciences has a roof with a life of its own. The roof, which is covered in six inches of soil that helps insulate the building, also contains 60,000 photovoltaic cells that supply at least five percent of the Academy’s energy needs per year. A regulated air system also uses natural air currents to regulate temperature inside the building.

If these weird buildings pique your interest, you might want to read up on extreme architects and how they make a career of dreaming up imaginative structures.
